"Om mani padme hum" is the most important mantra in Buddhism. It is the six syllable mantra of the Bodhisattva of compassion Avalokiteshvara. Om Mani Padme Hum is written in Tibetan script. The Dalai Lama is said to be an incarnation of Avalokiteshvara, so the mantra is especially revered by his devotees.
People often desire a simple translation to this mantra. Roughly it can be interpreted to mean: "Hail the Jewel of Consciousness which has reached the heart's lotus." In other words, to have one's mind and heart become one. However, these words, only scratch the surface of what the mantra represents.It is said that all the teachings of Buddha are contained in this mantra. Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra invokes Chenrezig's blessing. Viewing the written form of the mantra is said to have the same effect.
